GM announced that the first buyers of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle with extended-range capability will be eligible for one of 4,400 free home charging stations. The program will provide Volt owners with a 240-volt charge station from either ECOtality, Inc. or Coulomb Technologies.

Because so many consumers compare the EV charging process to that of filling up an ICE car at a gas station, there’s an assumption by some that we have to try and replicate the gas station model for refueling electric vehicles. The typical electric range of PHEVs is from about 15 to 50 miles, with most now between 20 and 40 miles.

ClipperCreek, an Auburn, CA based manufacturer of electric vehicle charging equipment, has just announced the shipment of its 5,000th unit. Some of those units are being paid for by a California Energy Commission grant to upgrade existing Avcon charging stations across California. Just as they have been for over ten years.

Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) home wall units are priced at between about $1000 and $2500. All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. This will actually be sufficient for many if not most Volt drivers, and quite a few LEAF drivers. Plus installation. Need it cost this much?
