Below $30,000! MG 2 coming in 2025 to shatter electric car price barrier

Chinese-owned MG is hatching a cheaper sibling to its current all-electric MG 4 that will share tech but be priced from less than €20,000 ($33,000) when it makes its debut in 2025.

According to Auto Express, the new cheap EV could carry the MG 2 nameplate, signalling its positioning beneath both the new hybrid MG 3 (design studies pictured above) and larger all-electric MG 4.

Created to rival incoming Euro EVs like the cute Renault Twingo, the news that a cheaper EV offering was being hatched by MG was broken by MG Motor UK’s product and planning boss David Allison.

“I think everyone seems to be looking in that area at the moment – B-segment or just below it, around four metres in length, with that magic 20,000-euro price bracket”.

“If anyone’s going to do that, we should be right there.”

Confirming that work is already underway to develop, what could become the MG 2, Allison said the new cut-price EV is scheduled to land around the second half of 2025.

When it lands, expect a battery size of around 44kWh that should provide for a range of more than 320km for the cheapest versions.

It’s thought initially for the MG 2 to be strictly rear-wheel drive, although a more powerful dual-motor version is feasible as it will sit on the same MSP/Nebula platform as the MG 4 which opens the door for a powerful XPower hot hatch.

In-car tech should match the larger MG 3 with a seven-inch digital instrument cluster combined with a large 10.25-inch infotainment display.

Before the MG 2 lands in late 2025, MG has already revealed that it will roll-out replacements for both the MG ZS and HS SUVs, as well as launch the Cyberster electric roadster later this year.

Also in the pipeline is an all-electric ZS SUV and an MG 4-based wagon. The MG Marvel R SUV will also be available in right-hand drive opening the door for an Australian launch.
