New high conductivity composite solid electrolyte for solid-state Li batteries

Green Car Congress

Researchers in S. Korea have developed a new composite solid electrolyte that shows very high total conductivity (9.4 × 10- 4 S cm -1 ) at room temperaturefor all-solid-state lithium batteries. The new composite combines Li 1+x Al x Ti 2-x (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) with a NASICON (Na superionic conductor)-like structure with Bi 2 O 3. LATP is regarded as a promising solid electrolyte due to its high “bulk” conductivity (~10 -3 S cm -1 ) and excellent stability against air and moisture.

Researchers led by a team from Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) in Austria have shown that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) forms in the cathode of a Li–O 2 battery during discharge and from the onset charge, and that it is responsible for a major fraction of side products that cause fast ageing in the battery. A paper on their work is published in the journal Nature Energy. The paper also suggests an initial approach as to how the storage cell can protect itself from the reactive oxygen species.

Rice team fine-tunes sorbents for carbon capture, methane selectivity

Green Car Congress

Natural gas producers want to draw all the methane they can from a well while sequestering as much carbon dioxide as possible; filters optimize either carbon capture or methane flow, but no single filter will do both. New work form Rice University now shows that subtle adjustments in the manufacture of a polymer-based carbon sorbent make it the best-known material either for capturing the greenhouse gas or balancing carbon capture with methane selectivity, according to Rice chemist Andrew Barron.
