Volkswagen’s cabriolet version of the popular T-Roc compact SUV is now available to lease from around £250 per month.

The new Volkswagen T-Roc Cabriolet

Following the tradition of the Beetle and the Golf, although bringing to mind the divisive Range Rover Evoque convertible, the T-Roc Cabriolet features a classic soft top which can open automatically in just nine seconds. It can even open and close at speeds of up to 18mph.

The cabriolet also comes in two-door guise with no B-pillar, differentiating it slightly from the regular T-Roc. This is to allow for the soft top to retract and expand into the bodywork.

Don’t think it compromises on safety though. Roll-over protection, which can be extended behind the rear seats, springs upwards in the area of the rear headrests in response to exceeding a vehicle tilt.

In addition, the T-Roc Cabriolet is designed with a reinforced windscreen frame and other structural modifications  to ensure maximum safety.

The cabriolet will also offer Volkswagen’s next-generation Infotainment system (MIB3) as an option. This sees the vehicle become permanently online to offer completely new services and functions.

The infotainment unit in the car measures up to 8in, with the optional Active Info Display measuring 11.7in.

Two efficient TSI engines will be available alongside two specifications. A turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine will offer 113hp and 200Nm torque, while a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol with 148hp and 250Nm will also be available. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard while a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox is also available as an option.

To compliment the engines, ‘Style’ and ‘R-Line’ lines are offered. The Style specification focuses on design and individual flair, with the R-Line being the more sports-oriented offering thanks to sports-tuned running gear and the progressive steering with speed-dependent steering control.

An experiment initially started by Range Rover with its Evoque model, could Volkswagen offering a soft-top option truly ignite a new trend where Range Rover failed? Time will tell.
