Sandia researcher calculates likely discharge of 4.9-5.8 million barrels of oil from Deepwater Horizon well

Stewart K. Griffiths from Sandia National Laboratories reports in a paper accepted for publication in the ACS journal Environmental Science & Technology that the likely total discharge from the BP Macondo Prospect well (MC252) during the Deepwater Horizon accident was in the range of 4.9 to 5.8 million barrels. Minimum and maximum credible values of this discharge are 4.6 and 6.2 million barrels.

Researchers find new high-yield route for producing key plastic ingredient from biomass

Dauenhauer of the University of Massachusetts Amherst has discovered a new, high-yield method of producing p -xylene—the key ingredient used to make plastic bottles—from biomass-derived dimethylfuran and ethylene. The process is inexpensive and currently creates the chemical with a yield of 75%, using most of the biomass feedstock, Dauenhauer says.

Delta Air Lines‘ wholly-owned subsidiary Monroe Energy LLC has reached agreement with Phillips 66 to acquire the Trainer refinery complex south of Philadelphia. As part of the transaction, Monroe will enter into strategic sourcing and marketing agreements with BP and Phillips 66. The acquisition includes pipelines and transportation assets that will provide access to the delivery network for jet fuel reaching Delta’s operations throughout the Northeast, including its hubs at LaGuardia and JFK.
