The exterior

Looking back at the previous Golf Estate, the latest model is much more clear-cut and dynamic. The front end shows similarities to the new Golf with the headlights and tail light clusters featuring LED technology. Towards the rear of the car, the Estate shows its typical uniqueness that shows off a roof section that becomes flatter towards the rear as well as a coupe-type, angled rear window.

Getting into the specifics, the new generation is 4,633mm long and boasts a wheelbase of 2,686mm (a 66 mm increase). The increase in length makes the Golf Estate appear more elongated and flatter than its predecessor.

The interior

You guessed it, the increased exterior length and wheelbase has benefited the interior of the Golf Estate. The interior length has increased by 48 mm to 1,798 mm which gives everybody more legroom. The extra space has a particularly noticeable positive effect, to those in the back.

The boot size has increased by six litres compared to the Golf Estate 7, bringing the total space to 611 litres. Due to its clever design, you can now load the vehicle up to the roofliner that has an integrated luggage compartment net and the front seat backrests, the volume increases by twenty-two litres, 1,642 litres total.

If both hands are busy holding something, which they probably will be if you’re leasing the Golf Estate, you can add an electrically operated rear boot lid that opens using the sensor-controlled luggage compartment opener - by means of a foot gesture in front of the Golf Estate’s rear bumper.

Driving and engines

The Golf Estate follows suit with the hatchback, meaning you’ll be able to choose most of the same engines that includes a 1.5-litre petrol engine with 128 or 148bhp and a 2.0-litre diesel with 113 or 148bhp.

Volkswagen has also confirmed that there will be mild-hybrid technology on all petrol engines that also includes an automatic gearbox.

Trim levels

Above the basic Golf version, you will now have the option to choose from the Life, Style and R-Line equipment lines.

The basic model’s enhanced standard features already include the Lane Assist lane departure warning system, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking System and Pedestrian Monitoring, the new oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, XDS electronic differential lock, the Car2X traffic hazard alert, the keyless comfort start system Keyless Start and automatic lighting control.

What about the new Golf Alltrack?

The second generation of the Golf Alltrack will be launched alongside the new Golf Estate. Acting as a crossover between the Golf Estate and an SUV, the new Golf Alltrack features permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard, increased ground clearance, an all- terrain look including specific bumpers and a custom interior.
