Researchers uncover mechanism behind oil synthesis in algae

EEA: Fuel efficiency improvements of new cars in Europe slowed in 2016

The fuel efficiency of new cars sold in the European Union (EU) continued to improve last year but at a slower rate, according to provisional data from the European Environment Agency. The 1.4 g of CO 2 /km reduction (-1.2%) compared to 2015 constitutes the smallest annual improvement recorded over the last decade. Official emissions have decreased by a total of more than 22 g CO 2 /km (-16%) since 2010, when an updated monitoring system started under the current EU legislation.

GKN Driveline has presented an advanced technology concept for a fully integrated, compact eDrive system at the 2017 Auto Shanghai motor show. All of the components of GKN’s eDrive system are contained within a bespoke housing, resulting in optimized packaging and greatly simplifying the integration process for car manufacturers. Clemson research developing integrated modeling and control systems to reduce particulates from GDI engines

DLR developing novel thermochemical air conditioning unit for fuel cell and battery-electric vehicles

Continental introduces new e-axle at Shanghai; to begin production of 48V mHEV system in China this year

At Auto Shanghai 2017, Continental showcased a new compact, lightweight electrical axle drive. Weighing around 75 kilograms (165 pounds), the axle drive has a maximum output of up to 150 kW, a maximum torque of 400 N·m and overall dimensions of 400x500x320 millimeters. Continental says that this product is a key component allowing Chinese vehicle manufacturers to expand the range of electric vehicles especially in the mid-size class. MG Motor introduces E-motion concept electric car at Shanghai

UK-based MG Motor unveiled the MG E-motion at Auto Shanghai 2017. The modular architecture platform developed in-house delivers 0-100 km/h in less than four seconds, with a range of more than 500 km (311 miles). In addition to the E-motion concept, the brand unveiled a fully-customized version of the MG ZS compact SUV. Worldwide, the MG ZS has logged upwards of 20,000 registrations every month, the company said.

Fastned expands fast-charging network into Germany; “die Autowende”

The Netherlands-based Fastned, which plans to build a European network of fast-charging stations has acquired its first 14 locations in Germany. At these locations Fastned will build and operate stations with multiple fast chargers to charge the next generation of EVs at power levels of 150 kW to 350 kW. These will be the first of such stations in Germany that are accessible to all car brands, and where EVs can be charged with up to 500 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes.
