Tesla reintroduces 60 kWh version of Model S

Tesla Motors is reintroducing a 60 kWh version of its Model S , in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models. The starting price is $66,000 for the Model S 60 (RWD) and $71,000 for the Model S 60D (AWD). The Model S 60 has an estimated range of 210 miles; the Model S 60D of 218 miles. For $8,500 (which works out to $566.67/kWh), all Model S 60 customers can upgrade (via a software update) to a 75 kWh pack, extending the range to 249 miles and 259 miles, respectively.

Australian researchers find wild-type sorghum that can yield more than 10K liters ethanol per hectare

Scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls at the University of Adelaide have discovered that a variety of sorghum growing wild in Australia—Arun—theoretically has the potential to yield some 10,344 liters of bioethanol per hectare (1,106 gallons US per acre) from stem tissues alone. In an open-access study published in the journal PLOS ONE , the researchers assessed the stems of 12 varieties of sorghum for sugar content and ease of conversion to bioethanol.

New method for recovering lithium from natural salt pools with purity up to 99.9%

Researchers at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland, have developed new methods for the increasingly effective recovery of lithium from brine. The purity of the lithium solution increased from 95% to 99.9%—difficult —difficult and resource-intensive to accomplish using traditional methods. The lithium and lithium carbonate used in batteries are primarily produced from salt lake deposits.

US added almost 330K new diesel cars and SUVs in 2015

The US added 329,700 new diesel vehicles in 2015. California led the way in growth with a 15.4% increase in the number of registered diesel cars and SUVs in 2015, according to a Diesel Technology Forum analysis of the latest Vehicles in Operation (VIO) data compiled by IHS Automotive. Texas was number one in the nation in total number of registered diesel vehicles ahead of California, Florida, Washington and Pennsylvania.

California Superior Court strikes ARB amendments to diesel rule

A decision by the Superior Court of California in Fresno agreed with the California Trucking Association’s request to erase a range of amendments to the state’s major rule to clean up diesel trucks and buses. The case is not against the rule itself, which remains fully in effect, but amendments adopted in 2014, which provide flexibility to smaller fleets (three trucks or less); lower-use vehicles including those operated by small farmers; and fleets in some rural areas.

Nucor and JFE Steel form plate joint venture to supply growing demand in automotive market in Mexico

Nucor Corporation is forming a 50-50 joint venture with JFE Steel Corporation of Japan to build and operate a plant in central Mexico to supply that country’s automotive market. The plant is expected to have a cost of $270 million and a capacity of 400,000 tons per year of galvanized sheet steel. Germany’s KBA greenlights diesel emissions fix for 1.1M more VW Group cars; 2.5M in total

Luxembourg bus operator orders five Volvo 7900 plug-in hybrid buses; ABB fast chargers

New catalyst system produces H2 and CO2 from formic acid at low temperatures

An international team led by researchers at the University of Melbourne has developed a new catalyst system for the efficient removal of CO 2 from formic acid (HO 2 CH), resulting in the production of CO 2 and H 2 at a low temperature of 70 °C. Other methods for producing hydrogen from formic acid have required high temperatures, and also produce waste products. The work, described in an open-access paper in Nature Communications marks a new frontier in catalyst design at the molecular level.
