Not much to say other than I drove the EV into work again today. I put everything back together this weekend and made some small modifications to how the batteries were secured to the car in that area (where the gas tank use to be). It was a huge pain to get them out and remove that one cell, so I felt I should changes things a bit. Nobody wants to get in there and take this thing apart, but the day will come again. I've mounted my CellLogs further from the trunk lid.

The successful bench-scale test of a novel carbon dioxide capturing sorbent promises to further advance the process as a possible technological option for reducing CO 2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. Pike Research forecasts that the global market for all electric-drive buses—including hybrid, battery electric, and fuel cell buses—grow steadily over the next. 6 years, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 26.4% from 2012 to 2018. In a new report, “ Electric Drive Buses ”, Pike finds that China market will constitute the majority of global electric drive bus sales, while some of the more developed markets will see fluctuations in electric bus uptake.

Toyota to conduct plug-in vehicle charger infrastructure verification tests in Japan

J.D. Power and Associates study finds EPA emission-compliant heavy-duty engines yielding increase in engine problems, decline in satisfaction

Technology changes related to revised emissions standards for heavy-duty trucks are causing an increase in heavy-duty truck engine problems and a decrease in overall satisfaction with the powertrain, according to the JD Power and Associates 2012 US Heavy-Duty Truck Engine and Transmission Study. Now in its 16 th year, the study measures satisfaction with engines and transmissions among primary maintainers of heavy-duty (Class 8) trucks that are one model-year old.

Nikkei: Japan government to broaden disclosure of CHAdeMo quick-charging standards

The Nikkei reports that the Japan government will broaden its disclosure of CHAdeMo quick-charging technology standards for electric vehicles, currently known by only a few automakers, to promote the spread of EVs and related industries. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry aims to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure, which is still not widespread. METI also hopes the effort will pave the way for lower EV prices by encouraging more competition.

Zipcar and the City of Houston launch municipal car sharing program; hybrids and EVs

Zipcar, Inc.is partnering with with the City of Houston, Texas, to launch a municipal electric vehicle (EV) fleet sharing program: Houston Fleet Share. Through this program, 50 existing city-owned fleet vehicles—including 25 Nissan Leaf EVs—will be outfitted with Zipcar’s FastFleet proprietary fleet sharing technology for use by city employees across all departments.

Fisker: Karma fire caused by fault in low-temperature cooling fan; initiates recall

The roadside fire involving a Fisker Karma sedan on August 10 in Woodside, CA was caused by an internal fault in the low-temperature cooling fan, according to a statement released by Fisker Automotive. The investigation conducted by Fisker engineers, working with an independent fire expert from Pacific Rim Investigative Services Group, located the ignition source to the left front of the Karma, forward of the wheel, where the low temperature cooling fan is located.

New Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry opens in Jena; organic radical batteries, redox flow batteries and high-temperature batteries

Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems Hermsdorf / (IKTS) are launching the new Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry (CEEC) at Jena in Germany. CEEC Jena will focus on three types of batteries: organic radical batteries, redox flow batteries and high-temperature batteries (such as sodium-sulfur batteries), with applications for the latter two targeted at energy storage from renewable generation.

Alberta approves Lower Athabasca Regional Plan

The government of Alberta, Canada has approved the Lower Athabasca Regional Plan (LARP). The region includes a substantial portion of the Athabasca oil sands area, which contains approximately 82% of the province’s oil sands resource and much of the Cold Lake oil sands area. The Lower Athabasca Region represents the province’s fastest growing regional source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for approximately 15 per cent of the province’s total GHG emissions.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), in cooperation with Duke Energy and non-profit industry initiative Energy Systems Network (ESN), will participate in a joint smart-grid pilot project in Indiana, the United States. The aim of the project will be power-grid load-equalization and the establishment of an optimized vehicle-charging scheme. The project is scheduled to begin in early 2013 and to run for approximately one year.
