ExxonMobil and Synthetic Genomics Inc. announced a new phase in their joint algae biofuel research program ( earlier post ) that could lead to the technical ability to produce 10,000 barrels of algae biofuel per day by 2025. The new phase of research includes an outdoor field study that will grow naturally occurring algae in several contained ponds in California.

The measure will contribute to reaching EU energy and climate change goals while limiting distortions of competition. Goodyear develops new tire technology to optimize EV performance; also introduces Oxygene concept with moss

Goodyear offered a preview during the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show of its EfficientGrip Performance with Electric Drive Technology, a prototype tire for the growing electric vehicle market that will be on the road by 2019 in Europe. Goodyear testing reveals that traditional tires can wear out up to 30% faster on electric vehicles due to the powerful, instant torque from electric motors and the additional vehicle weight from heavy battery packs.

Scania testing engines running on untreated biogas and landfill gas

In collaboration with Linköping-based energy recovery specialists Tekniska verken, Scania Engines is currently testing one of its engines using raw gas, biogas that is untreated—i.e., not cleaned or upgraded to remove wastewater, CO 2 and other particles, as happens with the production of compressed natural gas for vehicle fuels. Instead, the raw gas is taken directly from the digestion chambers as fuel for the Scania engine, to see how it performs over 600 hours of tests.

California ARB awards $7M for ultra-low NOx heavy-duty diesel truck demo project with Achates opposed-piston engines

The California Air Resource Board (CARB) is awarding $7 million to CALSTART to develop a Class 8 truck that will achieve a 90% reduction in NO x along with a 15-20% fuel efficiency improvement. The project will build and install diesel-fueled two-stroke compression-ignition Achates Power Opposed-Piston Engines into Class 8 demonstration trucks that will be road-road ready in 2019 and operate in fleet service in California in 2020. California’s ultra-low NO x emissions standard is 0.02

Air pollution exposure during fetal life linked to brain alterations and cognitive impairment in children

A new study performed in the Netherlands has linked exposure to residential air pollution during fetal life with brain abnormalities that may contribute to impaired cognitive function in school-age children. The study, published in Biological Psychiatry , reports that the air pollution levels related to brain alterations were below those considered to be safe. Exposure to fine particles during fetal life was associated with a thinner outer layer of the brain (the cortex) in several regions.

Renault presents new 1.3L TCe engine at Geneva; co-developed with Daimler; ~1M units per year

Renault is presenting the new turbocharged gasoline 1.3 TCe engine, co-developed by the Alliance and Daimler, at the Geneva Motor Show. Researchers show that single Pt atoms can perform CO oxidation at low temperatures; implications for catalytic converters

Toyota phasing out diesel in passenger cars in Europe, keeping diesel for commercial vehicles

Buoyed by strong European customer demand for hybrid versions on its core models, Toyota will phase out diesel engines from all its passenger cars in 2018. In 2017, hybrids represented 41% of Toyota’s European total sales, rising +38% year-on-year to 406,000 units. In contrast, Toyota’s diesel mix on passenger cars was less than 10% in 2017. However, Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in commercial vehicles (Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser) to meet customer needs.

BMW Group Leipzig plant launches series production of the BMW i8 Roadster PHEV

The BMW Group Leipzig plant has started series production of the BMW i8 Roadster, unveiled at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show ( earlier post ). It will be launched parallel to the enhanced version of the BMW i8 Coupé. Both vehicles are flexibly manufactured on a single line in the BMW Group plant Leipzig according to customer requirements. The BMW i8 Roadster features an electric soft top, and the new BMW i8 Coupe is an extremely sporty 2 + 2-seater.
