ExxonMobil and Synthetic Genomics Inc. announced a new phase in their joint algae biofuel research program ( earlier post ) that could lead to the technical ability to produce 10,000 barrels of algae biofuel per day by 2025. The new phase of research includes an outdoor field study that will grow naturally occurring algae in several contained ponds in California.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce its 12m battery-electric Citaro bus in September at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show, with the start of series production also taking place this year. ( Earlier post.) The company has now given a preview of the new locally emission-free 12-meter variant. The drive system of the new all-electric Citaro is based on the tried and tested ZF AVE 130 electric portal axle with electric motors at the wheel hubs, as previously deployed in other variants of the Citaro.

The European Commission has approved under EU State aid rules an Italian support scheme for the production and distribution of advanced biofuels, including advanced biomethane. The measure will contribute to reaching EU energy and climate change goals while limiting distortions of competition. The Italian scheme supports the production and distribution of advanced biofuels and advanced biomethane, also known as second and third-generation biofuels, for use in the transport sector.

Goodyear offered a preview during the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show of its EfficientGrip Performance with Electric Drive Technology, a prototype tire for the growing electric vehicle market that will be on the road by 2019 in Europe. Goodyear testing reveals that traditional tires can wear out up to 30% faster on electric vehicles due to the powerful, instant torque from electric motors and the additional vehicle weight from heavy battery packs.

Eleven companies, including automakers Toyota Motor, Nissan Motor, and Honda Motor, have jointly formed Japan H2 Mobility, LLC (JHyM), aimed at the full-fledged development of hydrogen stations for fuel cell vehicles (FCV) in Japan. The newly formed JHyM will foster the deployment of hydrogen stations throughout Japan under the guidance of the Japanese Central Government’s Ministerial Council on Renewable Energy, Hydrogen and Related Issues (“Basic Hydrogen Strategy” published in December).

In collaboration with Linköping-based energy recovery specialists Tekniska verken, Scania Engines is currently testing one of its engines using raw gas, biogas that is untreated—i.e., not cleaned or upgraded to remove wastewater, CO 2 and other particles, as happens with the production of compressed natural gas for vehicle fuels. Instead, the raw gas is taken directly from the digestion chambers as fuel for the Scania engine, to see how it performs over 600 hours of tests.

Average CO 2 emissions generated by new cars in Europe increased during 2017—the first rise in 10 years— according to a new analysis by JATO Dynamics. At the Geneva Motor Show this week, Mercedes-Benz is unveiling two new preproduction models that combine the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine with the latest-generation 9G-TRONIC 9-speed hybrid transmission. Like the S 560 e (combined fuel consumption 2.1 l/100 km (112 mpg US), combined CO 2 emissions 49 g/km) ( earlier post ), the C- and E-Class plug-in diesel hybrids will use third-generation hybrid technology.

The California Air Resource Board (CARB) is awarding $7 million to CALSTART to develop a Class 8 truck that will achieve a 90% reduction in NO x along with a 15-20% fuel efficiency improvement. The project will build and install diesel-fueled two-stroke compression-ignition Achates Power Opposed-Piston Engines into Class 8 demonstration trucks that will be road-road ready in 2019 and operate in fleet service in California in 2020.

A new study performed in the Netherlands has linked exposure to residential air pollution during fetal life with brain abnormalities that may contribute to impaired cognitive function in school-age children. The study, published in Biological Psychiatry , reports that the air pollution levels related to brain alterations were below those considered to be safe.

Toyota Motor Corporation and JapanTaxi Co., Ltd., jointly with KDDI Corporation and Accenture, have developed a taxi dispatch support system that predicts demand for taxi services, combining data from taxi service logs with predictions of demographics made by location-based big data from smartphones as well as event information. Researchers at Hasselt University in Belgium are proposing a new class of solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) for Li-ion batteries: deep eutectic solvent (DES)–silica composites. The DES-based gel electrolytes—to which the team refers as eutectogels (ETGs)—are characterized by high ionic conductivity (1.46 mS cm –1 ), thermal (up to 130 °C) and electrochemical stability (up to 4.8 V), and are chemically inert to solvents and water.

SAIC Motor Corporation Limited and Infineon Technologies AG established a joint venture to manufacture power modules for the developing electric vehicle market in China. SAIC Motor holds a stake of 51% of the JV and Infineon 49 percent, respectively. The partners have received all approvals by public authorities. The JV is named SIAPM (SAIC Infineon Automotive Power Modules (Shanghai) Co, Ltd.).

Renault is presenting the new turbocharged gasoline 1.3 TCe engine, co-developed by the Alliance and Daimler, at the Geneva Motor Show. The new unit will feature under the hoods of Captur and Scénic, and will become available for other Renault models in the course of 2018. The new 1.3-liter powerplant combines greater driving enjoyment with higher torque at low engine speeds, plus higher, more consistent torque at higher revs and lower fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions.

Researchers from Washington State University and Tufts University have “ unambiguously ” shown for the first time that individual Pt atoms on a well-defined Cu 2 O film are able to perform CO oxidation (i.e., converting CO to CO 2 )—a chemical reaction that is commonly used in catalytic converters to remove CO from car exhaust—at low temperatures.

The all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta, unveiled in January at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit ( earlier post ) will offer improved EPA-estimated fuel economy for the model: 30 mpg city (7.8 L/100km) and 40 mpg (5.88 L/100km) highway, for a combined 34 mpg (6.91 L/100km), two mpg higher on the combined measure than the automatic transmission version of the current generation Jetta.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding $12 million to support early-stage research for natural gas engines and off-road fluid power systems. Buoyed by strong European customer demand for hybrid versions on its core models, Toyota will phase out diesel engines from all its passenger cars in 2018. In 2017, hybrids represented 41% of Toyota’s European total sales, rising +38% year-on-year to 406,000 units. In contrast, Toyota’s diesel mix on passenger cars was less than 10% in 2017. However, Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines in commercial vehicles (Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser) to meet customer needs.

Polestar, Volvo Cars’ new electric performance brand, introduced the Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The European debut follows its global media reveal in Shanghai, China, in late 2017. ( Earlier post.). Polestar 1 is an electric performance hybrid 2+2 GT coupé which produces 600 horsepower and 1,000 N·m of torque, as well as 150 km (93 miles) of all-electric range—the longest AER of any hybrid car in the world.
