3 Fuel Cell Cars from 3 OEMs Complete 1,137km Demonstration Run in Japan

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles from Toyota (the FCHV-adv), Nissan (X-Trail FCV) and Honda (FCX Clarity) completed a 1,137 km (706.5 miles) demonstration run from Tokyo to Fukuoka to demonstrate that they can go as far as gasoline-powered cars on a single fueling. The total amount of hydrogen used in the process of driving the cars was 28.8k; average fuel economy was 118.4 km/kg (73.6 mi/kg). The vehicles were refueled twice during the two-day journey. Drivers stayed overnight in Osaka.

Researchers at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville have shown that a combination of photosystem I from a thermophilic bacterium and cytochrome-c 6 can, in combination with a platinum catalyst, generate a stable supply of hydrogen in vitro upon illumination. A paper on their work was published online 8 November in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

Reva to bring new electric car to Iceland

Reva, the Indian electric car company best known for the G-Whiz in England, has signed a deal to bring their new product to Iceland with sales beginning within a year. The NXG and NXR, revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show recently, have a Th!nk nk City-like footprint, 100 mile range and 65 mph top speed. Electricity is a more renewable resource than ice in Iceland. This provided hydrogen utopians with the world's best-case scenario for transitioning to a hydrogen economy.

The idea that a wholesale switch to electric cars would automatically reduce CO2 emissions and dependence on oil is one of a number of myths dispelled by a major new report conducted on behalf of the Environmental Transport Association (ETA). The German manufacturer will offer the two-mode hybrid as part of a special lease option from Monday, with a monthly lease price of $659 for 36 months and $549 for 60 months.
