Nissan reports failure rate of LEAF battery pack in Europe of less than 0.01%

Five years and more than 35,000 European sales since the launch of its all-electric LEAF, proprietary data released by Nissan show that 99.99% of its battery units remain entirely fit for purpose. The failure rate of the battery power unit is less than 0.01 percent—three units in total—a fraction of the equivalent industry-wide figure for defects affecting traditional combustion engines.

Mercedes-Benz is making a strategic push on plug-in hybrids: the Stuttgart-based automaker will introduce 10 new plug-in hybrid models by 2017. The company said that the main emphasis as regards alternative drives in years to come will be on plug-in hybrids. Obama orders GHG cuts for Federal Agencies; 50% of all new agency vehicles to be ZEV or PHEV by 2025

President Obama today signed a wide-ranging executive order mandating cuts in greenhouse gas emissions for Federal agencies. Through more efficient Federal operations, agency direct greenhouse gas emissions can be cut by at least 40% over the next decade, the order suggests. Gallup poll finds Americans’ worries about environmental threats easing

Americans’ concern about several major environmental threats has eased after increasing last year, according to Gallup’s annual Environment survey, conducted March 5-8. As in the past, Americans expressed the greatest worry about pollution of drinking water, and the least about global warming. Gallup trends on many of these items stretch back more than two decades.

Cadillac CT6 mixed-material body structure saves 90 kg over predominantly steel construction

Cadillac will use an advanced mixed-material approach for the lightweight body structure of the upcoming CT6 range-topping full-size sedan, which will debut 31 March at the New York International Auto Show. The structure is aluminum-intensive, but the new Cadillac also includes 13 different materials customized for each area of the car to advance driving dynamics, fuel economy and cabin quietness; the mixed material approach saved 90 kg (198 pounds) compared to a predominately steel construction.

Ford hits 5-million mark with EcoBoost engines

Late last week, the 5-millionth vehicle with a Ford EcoBoost engine rolled off the assembly line at Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan. Ford had celebrated the production of its 500,000 th EcoBoost-equipped vehicle les than three years ago. A Ford Focus equipped with 1.0-liter turbocharged engine represents the 5-millionth Ford EcoBoost engine produced. EcoBoost was launched in 2009 on Ford Taurus SHO with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. That year, 14,439 EcoBoost engines were manufactured.

Report: VW Group to decide how to proceed with Quantumscape solid state energy storage by July

Achates Power awarded $14M military single-cylinder engine project; partnering with Cummins

Purdue researchers convert packing peanuts into anode materials for Li-ion batteries; outperforming graphite

Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center have linked fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution to a dangerous narrowing of neck arteries that occurs prior to strokes. pollutants are particulates with diameters less than 2.5 millionths of a meter. Lux Research: the $40,000, 200-mile-range EV is the biggest coming growth opportunity for energy storage in transportation

Analysis by Lux Research suggests that the market space represented by the emerging lower-cost, 200-mile-range EV will be the biggest coming growth opportunity in electric storage for transportation. Volkswagen of America is hosting a media drive in Austin this week to introduce the newest US member of the seventh-generation Golf family, the Golf SportWagen. Toyota to begin sales of Mirai fuel cell vehicle in Europe by September

At the Geneva motor show, Toyota announced that it would begin sales of the new Mirai fuel cell vehicle ( earlier post ) in Europe by September. Sales of the FCV began in Japan last December. European launch markets in 2015 will be the UK, Denmark and Germany; more markets will be added in 2017. Toyota said that it is expecting annual volume of 50-100 cars/year in 2015 and 2016. Boeing enhances 777; up to 5% improvement in fuel use per seat

At the recent ISTAT (International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading) Americas conference, Randy Tinseth, vice president, marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes unveiled a series of product improvements that will be available on the 777-300ER, the 777-200LR and the 777 Freighter. Baseline engine, airplane weight and aerodynamic improvements will be phased into production by the third quarter of 2016, lowering trip fuel use by 2%.

BASF and Floatility partner on ultra-lightweight solar-powered electric scooter: 12kg e-floater

BASF and Floatility have partnered for the development of an ultra-lightweight and solar-powered electric scooter. Weighing less than 12 kilograms (26.5 lbs) and consisting of more than 80% composite and plastic materials from BASF, the scooter will give commuters the sensation of floating and thus has been named ‘e-floater’.
