5G and Electric Vehicles: Essential Connectivity for Intelligent E-Mobility

5G and Electric Vehicles, Ford, Aptiv, Continental, Keolis, Hyundai

The electric vehicle industry continues to fortify its advances in all-electric driving with features beyond the battery like Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity, both of which create smarter, higher performing, and more connected vehicles.

To handle the bandwidth and speed necessary for these eventually ubiquitous communication channels, and to allow advances in technology like Electra’s own AI battery pack controls, 5G networks bring the rapid communication necessary to enable a future of seamless connectivity. Several automotive and electric vehicle companies are pioneering these methods by heavily investing in 5G networks and communication to support the success of their core e-mobility business.

Trending 5G E-Mobility Companies

To stay up to date on the latest in 5G EV innovation, it’s essential to understand the many ways top companies are utilizing their access to this transformative technology. Here are 4 companies in the mobility industry leading the way in incorporating 5G technology:

Continental boasts multiple technological advances for electric vehicles at the advent of 5G networks around the world, including Vehicle-to-Vehicle connections and real-time updates thanks to faster network speeds as a part of their 5G Automotive Association membership since 2016. This advanced level of connectivity will not only improve UI/UX infotainment systems, but the functionality of the vehicles themselves with particular emphasis on data transmission for safety warnings and driving adjustments through live updates.

Aptiv & Hyundai

Just over a year ago, the news broke in the automotive industry that Aptiv and Hyundai were teaming up in a joint venture to produce successful autonomous vehicles by 2022. Essential to this project are the establishment of 5G networks around the globe: autonomy relies on the rapid transmission of vast amounts of automotive and environmental data to inform the models.

Similarly to Aptiv and Hyundai’s autonomous vehicle projects, Keolis is taking advantage of the rapidity of 5G networks to fuel their autonomous vehicles. The company tested its electric, autonomous vehicles (on which the words “5G RIDE” are printed) in Stockholm, Sweden this past autumn to test the technology in an urban setting. This is the 5th country that Keolis has used as a test site for its vehicles, and it plans to incorporate its 5G fleet technology in public transportation systems worldwide when testing is complete.

The automotive giant began its use of 5G in e-mobility from its factory floors in the UK as of mid-2020. In cooperation with Vodafone, the company is using 5G private networks to coordinate electric vehicle manufacturing across functions to streamline and modernize the process for efficient e-mobility manufacturing for faster deployment time.

Electra's 5G Connectivity for Battery Packs

Electra’s own EVE-Ai™ 360 Adaptive Controls rely on rapid communication between fleets, individual vehicles, and the Cloud in order to inform the continuous learning of our battery pack control software using our proprietary AI algorithm. 5G networks will facilitate this process for Electra and the vehicles in which our technology is installed. This communication provide intelligent control strategies for extended range, reduced charge time, and higher performance using a software solution.
