Why no Diesel Hybrid Electric Cars?

I want to know why a car can't be designed like a locomotive. Have a diesel generator and electric motor without batteries. I read where a locomotive is very efficient.

Yes, a locomotive is very efficient. Also, according to "How Stuff Works", The locomotive was designed as a hybrid for the electric motor's efficiency, and also in order to eliminate the need for a transmission.
That system is really good at moving a large amount of freight at a constant speed.
With cars, though...there's the rub. You need to start, and stop, and go up hills and such.
I think I'd keep the batteries and the transmission, myself.
