The cost of generating power from renewable energy sources has reached parity or dropped below the cost of fossil fuels for many technologies in many parts of the world, according to a new report released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

BYD Motors Inc. unveiled the first long range, 100% battery-electric over-the-road coach bus (as opposed to a city transit bus) at the United Motorcoach Association Expo in New Orleans. This first electric coach—the BYD C9—is a two-axle, 40'' coach with the seating capacity to carry 47 people at highway speed for more than 190 miles. The BYD C9 is the first of three battery-electric coaches the company will launch globally this year.

Cal State LA hydrogen station becomes first in state certified to sell to the public by the kilogram

The Cal State L.A. CSULA) Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility has become the first hydrogen station in California to be certified to sell fuel to the public by the kilogram measure. Although the state currently has other other hydrogen stations “open to the public”, these stations have had to sell hydrogen by the tank, explained Michael Dray, the technical operations manager of the Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility at CSULA.

Production and sales of plug-ins boomed in China in 2014

The production and sales of plug-in vehicles in China boomed last year, according to statistics from CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers). Total production reached 78,499 units, 3.5 times the number in 2013. Among the total, 48,605 units were battery electric vehicles (BEV) (62%) and 29,894 units were plug-in hybrids (PHEV) (38%)—2.4 times and 8.1 times the numbers of 2013. As for the sales, the total volume reached 74,763 units, 3.2 times from a year earlier.

The battery-electric Nissan LEAF has topped its own European sales record with a 33% increase in European sales in 2014 over the previous year, taking 26% of the burgeoning electric car market with 14,658 sales out of a total 56,393, according to figures from Nissan. Nissan and its partner Renault together accounted for a full 46% of the EV market in Europe in 2014.

Fuji Pigment unveils rechargeable Aluminum-air battery; targeting initial commercialization this spring

SolidEnergy targeting rechargeable Li-metal smartphone battery in 2016, EV battery with 2x range in 2017

SolidEnergy , an MIT spin-out commercializing solid electrolyte technology enabling the use of lithium metal anodes for high energy density rechargeable batteries ( earlier post ), says that in 2016, it and its battery manufacturing partners will release a 2 Ah commercial battery for the smartphone and wearable market. This is to be followed in 2017 by a 20 Ah electric vehicle battery offering more than two times the driving range of current Li-ion batteries.

Toyota to quadruple original production capacity for Mirai FCV; 1,400 units already ordered

The Nikkei reports that Toyota will further boost its production capacity for the Mirai fuel cell vehicle to 3,000 units by 2017, based on demand in Japan and the company’s plans to introduce Mirai into other markets. In December 2014, the Nikkei reported that Toyota would invest some $165 million to triple capacity ( earlier post ); the new report envisions a quadrupling of the original plan. Toyota had originally set production capacity at 700 units.

Chevrolet unveils Bolt EV Concept; 200+ electric miles for ~$30,000

At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Chevrolet introduced the Bolt EV concept crossover—a vision for an affordable, long-range all-electric vehicle designed to offer more than 200 miles of range starting around $30,000. The Bolt EV concept is designed to offer long-range performance in all 50 states and many global markets. Drivers will be able to select operating modes designed around preferred driving styles such as daily commuting and spirited weekend cruising.

Petrobras becomes largest oil producer among publicly traded companies

In the third quarter of 2014, Petrobras surpassed ExxonMobil’s oil production, and is now the largest producer of liquid hydrocarbons among its publicly traded peers. Considering oil and natural gas, the company is now fourth in the ranking. CCM forecasts 5-fold growth in China Li-ion market by 2017 to meet EV demand

Turbomeca introduces additive manufacturing capability for production engine components

After years of maturation and prototype testing, helicopter engine manufacturer Turbomeca (Safran) has entered serial production of parts using the latest additive manufacturing (3D printing) process at its Bordes facility in France. Arrano test and production engines will feature fuel injector nozzles made using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) techniques. Turbomeca introduced the Arrano 1,100 shp turboshaft engine at Heli-Expo in 2013.

The US imports almost half of the crude oil that we use. We import 7.5 million barrels per day. The chart below shows the EIA prediction that production will slowly fall and imports will rise (AEO 2014) after 2016. This means that the US will never be self-sufficient in oil. Not even close.

ITF: Freight transport will replace passenger traffic as main CO2 source from surface transportation by 2050

Freight will replace passenger traffic as main source of CO 2 emissions from surface transport.

In a new report , Navigant Research forecasts that global sales of electric drive and electric-assisted medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles (MHDV, Classes 3 to 8) will grow from less than 16,000 in 2014 to nearly 160,000 in 2023, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.3%. Powertrain type included in the report are hybrid-electric, plug-in hybrid electric, and battery electric. Onboard energy storage can be achieved via batteries, ultracapacitors, or a combination of both.

China Yuchai LNG engine powers the “Fuel Efficient Heavy-Duty Truck of the Year 2014” in China
