The American low-speed electric vehicle (LSEV) manufacturer AYRO has placed an order with Saietta Group, a British electric drive (eDrive) specialist, for 3,000 electric drive (eDrive) units.

The new AYRO Vanish, a utility LSEV unlike any other that supports campus mobility, last-mile deliveries, and micro-distribution, will go into production later this year. Saietta eDrive units will power it, with deliveries starting in Q3 2023.

Saietta and AYRO have closely collaborated over the past 12 months to design, engineer, test, and validate a custom eDrive that will provide class-leading performance and excellent efficiency on urban-duty cycles for the new AYRO Vanish.

Tony Gott, Executive Chairman of Saietta Group plc, commented, “We are delighted to be working with AYRO. It underscores Saietta’s extensive engineering capabilities, from designing and developing high-tech eDrive systems that meet the exacting requirements of individual customer applications to helping the OEM, such as AYRO, to seamlessly implement and integrate our powertrain solutions into next-generation zero-emissions vehicles. Speed to market is key for OEMs as lightweight mobility rapidly transitions to electric propulsion globally.”

Mr. Gott also said, “Saietta has developed a competitive advantage from engineering complete eDrive solutions specifically for this market sector with plenty of modularity built into the designs. This means we can work closely with clients to quickly tailor the core technology to their specific application, thereby rapidly and cost effectively delivering bespoke solutions which provide a competitive advantage. Our flexible approach is the polar opposite of ‘one size fits all.”

Tom Wittenschlaeger, Chief Executive Officer of AYRO, noted, “Over the last year, we have been impressed by Saietta’s innovation, flexibility and engineering pace. As we approach the start of production for the revolutionary new AYRO Vanish, Saietta is the natural eDrive partner for AYRO. We believe that their eDrive solution, amongst numerous other class-leading innovations, will put us best-in-class in our segment. With significant growth anticipated across the final mile delivery sector globally, today’s order reinforces that there is clear demand for our products and services around the world, very much including in the U.S.”

Electric motors using Saietta’s Axial Flux Technology (AFT) are made to produce high torque, high power, and great efficiency during urban duty cycles while operating at low voltage and rpm. The AFT140i, the company’s first commercial electric motor, is totally sealed, liquid cooled, and specially designed for usage in urban delivery vans. Because it has an axial flux architecture, the motor is small and light, which maximizes the amount of room for passengers and goods. Moreover, the AFT140i includes a completely integrated controller that is housed in the same enclosure and has a same cooling system. This controller is coupled to a transmission that was created especially for the eDrive.

The AYRO custom solution has successfully undergone extensive in-vehicle testing, assessment, and validation, demonstrating that it is extremely robust and durable and perfectly suited to the usual daily stop–start journeys made by urban automobiles in the United States.

The final-mile delivery market is expected to reach $165.6 billion in sales by 2027, growing at a rate of about 16% CAGR. This industry is anticipated to expand by $15 billion and about 7% in the U.S. alone during that time period.
