The Government of Canada announced federal investments totalling nearly $15 million (US$11.2 million) for the installation of more than 2,350 EV chargers, 2,100 of which will be installed across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). This funding was provided to 32 organizations, including municipalities, multi-resident buildings (MURBs), private firms and utilities.

Volvo Cars reported global sales of 48,520 in January, up 2% compared to the same month last year. Sales of Volvo Cars´ Recharge models of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars increased by 31% in January year-on-year, accounting for 40.7% of all Volvo cars sold globally during the month. The share of fully electric cars stood at 16.2%. European sales for January reached 21,436 cars, up 14.7% compared with the same period last year.

Australia-based Liontown Resources has begun open pit mining operations at the Kathleen Valley Lithium Project in Western Australia ( earlier post ); the first blast was successfully fired at the Mt. Mann Open Pit by mining services provider Iron Mine Contracting. (Liontown has already secured offtake agreements with Tesla, Ford and LG Energy Solutions.

Tesla has increased prices on its Model Y all-electric crossover and cut prices on the Model 3 sedan. Tesla’s Model Y Long Range increased $1,500 from $53,490 to $54,990 last night, while Model Y Performance trims went up $1,000 from $56,990 to $57,990. Model 3 Rear-Wheel-Drive vehicles also felt a slight cut by just $500, going from $43,990 to $43,490.

Ferrari is taking a page out of the Tesla Roadster’s notebook after the Italian supercar company recently applied for a patent for a “pulsejet” system that aims to increase vehicle performance and is similar to what Elon Musk has in store of the reiteration of its first-ever car. Although the Italian carmaker first filed the patent for High-Performance Car with Gas Pushers in 2019 , it was only published to the U.S.

In 2022, Adamas Intelligence calculated that $3.8 billion worth of magnet rare earth oxides—i.e., NdPr, Dy and Tb oxides—were consumed globally in NdFeB alloys for energy-transition-related applications, including EV traction motors and wind power generators. The total value of rare earth oxides consumed for the energy transition each year quadrupled between 2020 and 2022.

Air Liquide and TotalEnergies will create an equally owned joint venture to develop a network of hydrogen stations, geared towards heavy-duty vehicles on major European road corridors. This initiative will help facilitate access to hydrogen, enabling the development of its use for goods transportation and further strengthening the hydrogen sector. The partners aim to deploy more than 100 hydrogen stations on major European roads—in France, Benelux and Germany—in the coming years.

BMW has announced that it will invest 800 million euros ($863 million) into its new production location in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, following numerous other manufacturers rushing to America’s Southern neighbor. Following the introduction of the Inflation Reduction Act, which requires EVs to be assembled in North America to qualify for federal incentives, foreign automakers have rushed to establish new factories on the continent.

General Motors (GM) has announced that it will partner with Netflix to have its EV offerings displayed in shows on the streaming platform, but they are far from the only automaker looking to show off its upcoming EVs. GM is no stranger to marketing its EVs in fun and strange ways. Since its Superbowl ad about EVs in Norway stole the show back in 2021, the company has been dedicated to making marketing partnerships and creative ads that it hopes will bring new demand.

France’s auto market saw plugin electric vehicles (EVs) take 22.3% share of new sales in January, up from 17.6% year on year. Full electrics saw stronger growth than plugin hybrids. Overall auto volumes were 111,939 units, some 9% higher YoY, but still well below pre-2020 seasonal norms.
