Proterra is increasing the amount of energy onboard its purpose-built ZX5 electric transit bus, delivering more battery storage to help transit agencies scale zero-emission bus fleets with electric vehicle technology. Starting in 2023, the 40-foot Proterra ZX5 Max electric transit bus can be equipped with up to 738 kilowatt hours (kWh) of onboard energy.

California aims to increase zero-emission vehicle sales to 35% of all new car purchases by the 2026 model year, on the way to ending sales of new gasoline-only cars by the middle of the next decade. This proposed target from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) includes battery-electric cars, plug-in hybrids, and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.

BluE Nexus Corporation, AISIN CORPORATION, and DENSO Corporation jointly developed an eAxle for Toyota’s new battery-electric bZ4X. ( Earlier post.) BluE’s first eAxle has achieved excellent dynamic performance and downsizing and helps vehicles increase their electric mileage. BluE was established in April 2019 to develop and sell electric systems and driving modules by combining the strengths of AISIN, DENSO and Toyota in electrification ( earlier post ).

Production of the Honda Insight hybrid sedan will cease in June to make room for a new Civic Hybrid and other hybrid models, Honda announced Thursday in a press release. The Insight is based on a previous-generation Civic body shell, but positioned as a dedicated, more upscale hybrid model with unique styling. Honda said it is now changing.

Tesla earlier this week recalled 594,717 vehicles for an issue with its “Boombox” feature that left it potentially noncompliant with federal pedestrian safety requirements. PEM electrolyzer company Ohmium International closed a $45-million Series B financing round. Existing investor Fenice Investment Group led the round, with participation from current major investors and new investor Energy Transition Ventures. The funds will support Ohmium’s rapid growth plan to quadruple hydrogen manufacturing capacity from 500 MW annually to approximately two GW annually by the end of 2022.

As the next step in Honda’s electrification strategy in North America, the company will focus on increasing hybrid volume of core models: CR-V, Accord and, in the future, Civic. To make room for these moves, Honda will conclude Insight production in June. Honda will introduce all-new models of the CR-V Hybrid this year, followed by the Accord Hybrid, which will eventually make up 50% of the sales mix of each model.

A team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has developed a new computational model of a two-stroke scaled marine engine, with reduced chemical mechanisms for diesel, biodiesel, bio-oil, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). In a new open-access study published in the journal Fuel , the ORNL researchers used their model to assess the emissions of NO x and PAHs (as a surrogate for soot) of these fuel blends.

It appears that the wait for Gigafactory Shanghai’s return to production is almost over. If recent reports prove accurate, Tesla’s massive Model 3 and Model Y plant in Shanghai may restart its operations on Monday, April 18, 2022. Gigafactory Shanghai has been shut down since March 28, following the city’s implementation of its stringent anti-Covid measures.
