BYD, Toyota to establish joint company for battery-electric vehicle research and development

The new R&D company, which will work on designing and developing BEVs (including platform) and its related parts, is anticipated to be established in China in 2020, with BYD and Toyota to evenly share 50% of the total capital needed.

Aerial methane survey finds a fraction of point sources responsible for more than a third of California’s methane emissions

An aerial methane survey conducted by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), California Energy Commission (CEC) and NASA has found that just 10% of the point sources were responsible for 60% of the total methane emissions detected. Researchers believe that statewide, these relatively few super emitters are responsible for about a third of California’s total methane emissions.

A collaboration between Automobili Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a new MOF-based material that will serve as the foundation for a new generation of supercapacitors. The developers have filed for a patent; Automobili Lamborghini is a co-author. IHS Markit: US oil production growth heading for a major slowdown, as capital discipline and weak prices play out

US shale production—the chief source of rapid growth that made the United States the world’s largest oil producer—is slowing down fast, says a new report by IHS Markit. The new IHS Markit outlook for oil market fundamentals for 2019-2021 expects total US production growth to be 440,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2020 before essentially flattening out in 2021. Modest growth is expected to resume in 2022.

Upcycling polyethylene plastic waste into lubricant oils

Researchers in the US have developed a catalytic upcycling process using platinum nanoparticles supported on perovskites to convert single-use polyethylene (PE) (such as grocery bags) into value-added high-quality liquid products (such as motor oils and waxes). An open-access paper on their work is published in ACS Central Science. Hundreds of millions of tons of plastic are produced worldwide each year, and the majority of these materials are discarded after a single use.

EIB awards €17M to QEV to advance zero emissions transport in developing countries

E-mobility and R&D specialist QEV Technologies will receive €17 million from the European Investment Bank (EIB) for a variety of low-carbon transportation projects.
