Tesla begins unlocking Supercharger sites for all EVs

Elon Musk has just made good on a promise to revolutionise Australia’s (and the world’s) EV charging infrastructure, as Tesla begins unlocking Supercharger network for all EVs.

But this is only the first step, with the brand today unlocking five Supercharger sites — all of which are in NSW — with the remaining 45-odd Supercharger locations still Tesla only.

The brand says it’s the first step in a plan to unlock the entire Supercharger network across Australia, meaning drivers of the MG ZS EV or BYD Atto 3, all the way up to the BMW i7 and Audi e-tron, will be able to plug in and recharge.

The chargers aren’t free, with Tesla charging around .60c/kWh (though those prices do change), but the move will instantly improve Australia’s charging network, giving EV owners more places to recharge than ever before.

“Today we opened five Supercharger Stations in New South Wales to non-Tesla EVs. It has always been Tesla’s ambition to open the Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and by doing so, encourage more drivers to go electric. This move directly supports Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” the brand said in a statement.

“The select Supercharger stations in New South Wales are now accessible to non-Tesla EV drivers via the Tesla app. Tesla drivers can continue to use these stations as they always have.”

To find the new charging stations, though, you’ll have to head some way out of the city. The first locations are:

  • Narooma Plaza: 183 Princes Highway, Narooma New South Wales 2546
  • Hollydene: 3483 Golden Highway, Jerry’s Plains New South Wales 2330
  • West Tamworth League Club: 58 Phillip Street, Tamworth West New South Wales 2340
  • Western Plains Cultural Centre: 76 Wingewarra Street, Dubbo New South Wales 2830
  • Bathurst Visitor Information Centre: 1 Kendall Avenue, Bathurst New South Wales 2795

The Tesla Supercharger network delivers charging at up to 250kW, making them among the most powerful fast-charging solutions in Australia.

No, its not ‘around 60c/kWh’, is 79c and 66c with a monthly fee … get real.
