Saft team develops first metal hydride - sulfur Li-ion battery

Researchers at France-based battery major Saft, along with colleagues at Université Paris Est, have, for the first time, used a nanocomposite metal hydride as the anode in a complete solid-state battery with a sulfur cathode and LiBH 4 electrolyte. The cell shows a high reversible capacity of 910 mAh g −1 with discharge plateaus at 1.8 V and 1.4 V. Capacity remains at 85% of the initial value over the 25 first charge/discharge cycles.

Scania launches large-scale renewable diesel pilot for employees

Scania has launched a large-scale renewable diesel (HVO) pilot for employees based in Södertälje, Sweden, enabling them to fuel their cars with renewable diesel. In Sweden, HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is mainly produced by rape seed oil and waste from the food industry. HVO can reduce CO 2 emissions by up to 90%. The pilot—one of the largest of its kind—targets some 2,250 company cars and complements other sustainable commuting options available to Scania employees.

California Assemblyman files ballot initiative to repeal California gas tax increase

California Assemblyman Travis Allen (R-Huntington Beach) filed ballot initiative to repeal the recently signed $52 billion gas tax ( earlier post ) and move it to a vote in 2018. The new tax measure will raise the tax on gasoline from $0.18 per gallon to $0.30 per gallon. It will also raise annual vehicle registration fees by up to a $175. Taxes on diesel will climb from $0.20 to $0.36 cents a gallon, with the diesel sales tax climbing from 1.75% to 5.75%.
