EEA: increase in EU GHG emissions, mostly due to transport, hampers progress towards 2030 targets

Green Car Congress

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the European Union rose slightly in 2017, mostly because of the transport sector. Preliminary estimates published in the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) annual trends and projections assessments show a 0.6% emissions increase in 2017 from 2016. This limited increase means that the EU is still expected to achieve its 2020 emissions reduction target, albeit by a narrower margin.

Manufacturers will also have to ensure that zero- and low-emission vehicles (which emit at least 50% less) represent a 20% market share of the sales of new cars and vans by 2030, and 5% in 2025.

Protean Electric gaining traction in U.S., China with in-wheel motors — finally

China EV

The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but I think it applies to Protean Electric’s current situation. I’ve been writing about Protean since 2012. The “start-up” is still chugging along, still working to get automakers to give its in-wheel electric motors a try. “We have found it is very difficult to convince OEMS to use our motor,” Protean CEO KY Chan told me recently.

International study finds air pollution leads to millions of hospital visits for asthma attacks worldwide

Green Car Congress

Air pollution—specifically PM 2.5 , ozone and NO 2 —could be to blame for up to 33 million emergency asthma attack visits to hospital a year, according to a new open-access study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. The researchers aimed to estimate the number of asthma emergency room visits and new onset asthma cases globally attributable to PM 2.5 , ozone, and NO 2 concentrations.
