will renovate its battery facility in Shanghai to increase production processes and not involve an increase in production.

BYD plans to invest millions of yuan to expand its lithium battery facility in Shanghai, although this is only designed for manufacturing process improvements, not production increases.

The new energy vehicle (NEV) and power battery giant's battery plant in Shanghai is located in Songjiang district and is mainly engaged in the manufacture of electronic components, including lithium batteries and solar modules, as well as the processing of non-ferrous metal composites and new alloy materials.

The plant's existing products include lithium-ion batteries, solar modules, small energy storage systems, new lithium-ion batteries and magnesium-aluminum alloy components.

To meet market demand and the company's own development, BYD plans to invest RMB 5 million ($700,000) in the plant's expansion, according to an environmental assessment report released today on the Shanghai government's website.

BYD will use the A5 plant to add double-folding and inking processes to its new lithium battery products, a move that will not increase product output, according to the report.

After the project's expansion is completed, it is expected to handle 72 million new lithium batteries per year, according to the report.

BYD has multiple workshops at the facility, according to the report:

The plastic shell production line is mainly located in workshop A1.

Lithium-ion battery, high-capacity lithium-ion battery and new lithium-ion battery production lines are mainly located in A1, A2, A5 and A6.

Solar cell module production line is mainly located in A3.

The production line of reuse lithium battery module and small energy storage system is located in A4.

The production line of magnesium and aluminum alloy parts is located in A6.

BYD's planned expansion project only in the A5 workshop on the 4th floor to add 45 sets of inkjet machines and 5 sets of folding machines, for the new lithium battery products to increase the double folding and inking process, the report shows.

Except for the 4th floor of the A5 plant, the type and number of production equipment on each floor of the remaining production workshops will not change.

BYD is the largest manufacturer of NEVs in China and the second-largest manufacturer of power batteries in China.

BYD sold 201,259 NEVs in September, the seventh consecutive month of record-high sales and the first time the figure exceeded 200,000 units, according to data released earlier this month.

BYD's installed power and storage battery capacity in September was about 8.610 GWh, up 104.80 percent from 4.204 GWh in the same month last year and up 13.99 percent from 7.553 GWh in August.

So far this year, BYD's installed battery capacity is about 57.49 GWh, up 145.36 percent from 23.43 GWh in the same period last year.

In August, BYD's share of China's power battery market was 21.91 percent, second only to 's 46.79 percent, according to China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance data last month.
