The US Department of Energy announced up to $30 million in funding for a new Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program, Breakthroughs Enabling THermonuclear-fusion Energy ( BETHE ). BETHE projects will support the development of timely, commercially viable fusion energy, aiming to increase the number and performance levels of lower-cost fusion concepts.

The U.S. market has a new most energy-efficient vehicle, and it’s one made in America: the 2020 Tesla Model 3. Last model year the most efficient model you could buy was the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq Electric. The 2019 Tesla Model 3 had a range-and-efficiency edge, and it came close in Standard Range Plus form, with a 133 MPGe combined rating.

MAHLE Powertrain is presenting a new, prototype 48-volt battery with optimized battery cooling and cell chemistry to enable increased charge and discharge rates. Mild-hybrid vehicles need to recover energy efficiently and at a relatively high power during deceleration events. High storage capacity is not required for these applications as the recuperated energy can be deployed during the next acceleration.

The revamped 2020 Karma Revero GT has been EPA-rated for 61 miles of all-electric driving. That allows the Revero to leapfrog past the Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid (primarily a vehicle for California) and its 47 miles of all-electric driving. Hyundai wants us to know that with EVs, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fuel-cell passenger vehicles, it’s in it for the long haul. The carmaker said on Thursday that in the U.S. it has 13 “alternatively fueled vehicles” arriving by 2022, including six sedans and seven SUVs. That includes a new version of the Sonata Hybrid sedan.

Toyota and BYD will partner to develop BEVs for the Chinese market, the two companies announced Thursday. The automakers will invest 50-50 in a new company, the primary mission of which will be to design and develop BEVs from the ground up. MAN Energy Solutions and Wessels Marine GmbH announced a technical showcase whereby the 2017-retrofitted Wes Amelie , a 1,036-TEU feeder container ship, will use liquefied SNG (Synthetic Natural Gas) produced from renewable electrical energy as drop-in fuel. The companies are cooperating on the Wes Amelie project with Nauticor, the LNG transportation company, and Unifeeder, the charter company.
