Researchers at MIT’s Photonic Microsystems Group are developing a LiDAR-on-a-chip system that is smaller than a dime, has no moving parts, and could be mass produced at a very low cost to be used in self-driving cars, drones, and robots. An article describing the new system is published in IEEE Spectrum. Most LiDAR systems—like the ones commonly seen on autonomous vehicles—use discrete free-space optical components like lasers, lenses, and external receivers.

A team from CoorsTek Membrane Sciences, the University of Oslo (Norway), and the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ) (Spain) has developed a new process for the direct, non-oxidative conversion of methane to liquids—reducing cost, eliminating multiple process steps, and avoiding CO 2 emissions. The process uses a novel ceramic membrane that simultaneously extracts hydrogen and injects oxide ions.

Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have discovered an ultra-durable, self-lubricating tribofilm that regenerates in the presence of oil, heat, and pressure—meaning that it will not wear away over the life of an engine. The film, reported yesterday in the journal Nature , develops when a new catalytic coating that can be applied to engine parts interacts with lubricating oil to create an extremely tough coating that almost eliminates wear.

In Brazil, Nissan Motor revealed the first Solid Oxide Fuel-Cell (SOFC)-powered prototype vehicle that runs on bio-ethanol electric power. Research and development of the e-Bio Fuel-Cell was announced by Nissan in June in Yokohama. ( Earlier post.). The e-Bio Fuel-Cell prototype vehicle, based on a Nissan e-NV200 electric van ( earlier post ), is equipped with a 5 kW SOFC that runs on 100% ethanol to charge a 24 kWh battery that enables a cruising range of more than 600 km (373 miles).

Since launching on 1 July, Germany’s new plug-in vehicle (battery-electric and plug-in hybrid) discount scheme has attraced 1,791 buyers as of 4 July, according to figures released by Germany’s BAFA (Bundesamt für Wirtschaft und Ausfuhrkontrolle). The program grants buyers of electric cars a €4,000 (US$4,452) discount and buyers of plug-in hybrid vehicles a discount of €3,000 (US$3,339).
