NREL report on electric bus demo at Foothill Transit finds Proterra fuel economy >8x higher than CNG on same line

A team from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has released the second report summarizing the results of the battery-electric bus (BEB) demonstration underway at Foothill Transit in California. This latest report provides data and analysis on 12 Proterra BEBs and eight CNG baseline buses from August 2015 through December 2016. Among the findings are that the BEBs had an overall average efficiency of 2.17 kWh per mile—17.35 miles per diesel gallon equivalent (mpdge).

NHTSA to reexamine civil penalty rate adjustment for inflation for CAFE standards

The US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reexamining a rule that adjusts civil penalties related to the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for inflation. NHTSA is publishing two notices in the Federal Register (docket numbers NHTSA-2016-0136 and NHTSA-2017-0059). The first notice indicates that NHTSA is reconsidering the 28 December 2016 final rule, and seeks comment on the appropriate inflationary adjustment.

Alfen delivers 3MW storage system with BMW batteries

Dutch grid technology and services company Alfen has delivered a 3MW stationary storage system using BMW batteries to Nuon’s Prinses Alexia Windpark in Zeewolde, the Netherlands. The system will be expanded to 12 MW over the coming period, making it the largest storage project in the Netherlands. The Alfen storage system helps to smooth peaks and troughs in power supply and better match the demand for energy.
