Sales sensation! Electric Mazda EZ-60 is an immediate hit in China, but would it succeed in Australia?

The 2026 Mazda EZ-60 has been judged a sales success even before a single delivery.

An impressive 10,060 pre-orders were taken for the mid-size EV and range-extender hybrid in less than 48 hours after its reveal at the Shanghai motor show.

Admittedly, the pre-orders involved potential buyers placing only a small 10 yuan ($2) deposit.

Pre-orders opened after the unveiling of both the all-electric and plug-in hybrid range extender versions of the Mazda EZ-60.

Developed alongside the Deepal S07 thanks to Mazda’s joint venture with Changan, the new EZ-60 rides on the same Changan-sourced EPA architecture.

At the Chinese show it was revealed the range-extender variant combines a 72kW 1.5-litre engine – that only acts as a generator – with a 190kW e-motor and a 31.73kWh battery.

The latter is claimed to provide an EV range of more than 160km.

Details of the EV version have yet to be revealed but it’s thought to be offered with either a 68.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery or a more energy dense 80kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) power pack.

It also expected to share the Deepal S07’s single e-motor that produces 160kW and 330Nm.

If all that coms to pass, expect a zero to 100km/h dash of around 7.9 seconds with a range of around 475km on the WLTP test cycle.

A more powerful 190kW e-motor might also be offered.

Both come with the EZ-60’s sharp looks that bless it with a sleeker, lower more attractive stance compared to the combustion-powered CX-60.

The EV features a smoother completely enclosed front grille and a larger lower air intake.

At the rear the EZ-60 gets an unusual flying buttress D-pillar that is expected to cut drag to helping maximise range.

Instead of traditional door mirrors, the production EV features rear-facing cameras, while pop-out door handles are further signals designers have done everything they can to enhance aerodynamics.

The EZ-60’s cabin is no less striking, coming with a 26.45-inch 5K ultra-wide screen that integrates the digital instrument cluster, infotainment and physical buttons.

Rear screens are also present in the second row, while Mazda will offer its latest EV and range-extender hybrid with a powerful 23-speakers 71.4-channel Dolby Atmos sound system.

Luggage space in the boot is only average at 350-litres but that figure can be expanded to 2036-litre seats dropped. There’s also a 126-litre frunk.

When it comes to size, the EZ-60 measures in at 4850mm long, 1935mm wide and stands 1620mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2902mm.

Those figures mean the Mazda is 60mm longer, 15mm wider but 4mm lower than a Tesla Model Y. The EZ-60’s wheelbase is 22mm longer.

As standard, the EZ-60 scores nine airbags, level 2 autonomous aids and five HD cameras, five millimetre-wave radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

On track for first deliveries this August, the Mazda EZ-60 has already been confirmed for Europe and the right-hand drive UK market where it is likely to be renamed the CX-6e.

Mazda Australia has yet to announce whether it has plans to import the EZ-60. If a business case coms together, the new mid-size SUV could land in Australia as soon as late next year.
