Buick introduces active-hood technology in China; developed with GHBMC

To help increase pedestrian safety during low-speed collisions, General Motors is introducing a new pedestrian safety system on its recently launched new Regal midsize sedan in China. The new Regal is the first Buick to offer the automaker’s standard active-hood pedestrian safety system, which senses the imminent impact of a pedestrian from 25-48 km/h and uses a pyrotechnic actuator to lift up the back of the hood by about 10 cm in milliseconds to lessen the impact and potentially reduce injury.

Electric cars are some of fastest-selling used vehicles in the U.S.

But while cars that plug in take only a small share of new-vehicle purchases today—about 1 percent—they're apparently very popular once they're used. Diesel market share in Europe drops below 50%; offset by increased gasoline engine sales; implications for climate targets

Diesel’s market share in the EU-15 fell from 50.2% to 46.3% of new car registrations in the first half of 2017, according to the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA). In absolute numbers, 152,323 fewer diesel cars were sold. This drop was offset by an increase in the sale of gasoline engined vehicles. Automakers are cautioning that this shift to gasoline engines—with their higher CO 2 values—will pose additional challenges to meeting future CO 2 reduction targets.

DOE’s High Performance Computing for Manufacturing Program to issue 5th solicitation in January

The High Performance Computing for Manufacturing ( HPC4Mfg ) program in the Energy Department’s Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) ( earlier post ) intends to issue its fifth solicitation in January 2018 to fund projects that allow manufacturers to use high-performance computing resources at the Department of Energy’s national laboratories to tackle major manufacturing challenges.
