The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that global refining capacity decreased by 730,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2021—the first decline in global refining capacity in 30 years. In the United States, refining capacity has decreased by about 1.1 million b/d since the start of 2020, contributing 184,000 b/d to the global decline in 2021.

Pressured by the White House, Congress, and environmental groups, the United States Postal Service (USPS) now plans for electric vehicles to comprise half of its future mail-truck fleet. The Postal Service now plans for 25,000 EVs from an initial purchase of 50,000 new Next Generation Deliver Vehicle (NGDV) mail trucks from Oshkosh Defense.

Researchers in Europe led by a team from ETH Zurich have designed a fuel production system that uses water, CO 2 , and sunlight to produce aviation fuel. The team implemented the system at pilot-scale in the field to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the entire sun-to-liquid fuel process chain, from H 2 O and CO 2 to kerosene. An open-access paper on the work is published in the journal Joule.

Demand far exceeds supply for Ford electric vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and Ford Mustang Mach-E. But on Thursday, Ford confirmed some of the details on how it’s going to take advantage of that demand and dramatically ramp up its EV production over the next few years. By late 2023, Ford expects to build 270,000 Mustang Mach-E.
