UPS will deploy a prototype extended range Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in its Rolling Laboratory fleet of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. UPS is working with the US Department of Energy (DOE) and other partners to design a first-of-its-kind, zero tailpipe emissions, Class 6 medium-duty delivery truck that meets the same route and range requirements of UPS’ existing conventional fuel vehicles.

Ronn Motor Group (RMG), the developer of the Scorpion exotic sports car featuring supplementary hydrogen fuel injection to improve the performance and fuel consumption of its gasoline engine ( earlier post ) announced a Regulation A+ Mini-IPO that gives anyone the opportunity to invest in its company. RONN Motor Group plans to evolve the Scorpion into an all-electric roadster called the Phoenix through its equity crowdfunding effort.

WIth four-figure sales for both its all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid, GM probably led April's plug-in electric car sales. The "probably" comes because Tesla refuses to release its deliveries broken down either by month or by country, meaning there's no data to compare. GM's 3,102 deliveries—1,807 Volts, 1,292.

Toyota’s Project Portal is designing a heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell system for class 8 truck use at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. ( Earlier post.) Ricardo provided technical assistance to the project, including areas of design, vehicle build, testing and development, and is currently supporting vehicle trials. Renewable Energy Group, Inc. has secured financing of up to $20 million from First Midwest Bank for the $24-million capacity-expansion project at the company’s Ralston, Iowa biodiesel refinery. The upgrade project, announced last November, is expected to increase the annual nameplate capacity of the Ralston biorefinery from 12 million to 30 million gallons.

Researchers from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and Sandia National Laboratories, all members of the DOE’s Joint Center for Energy Storage Research (JCESR), have significantly improved the performance of Li-sulfur batteries under lean electrolyte conditions by using a soft PEO 10 LiTFSI polymer swellable gel as a nanoscale reservoir to trap the polysulfides.
