U Tokyo TFEP electrolyte solvent enables safer high-voltage, high energy-density Li-ion batteries

Green Car Congress

Researchers at the Graduate School of Engineering and Graduate School of Science at the University of Tokyo have designed and synthesized a fluorinated cyclic phosphate solvent, 2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane 2-oxide (TFEP), for use in lithium-ion batteries. The solvent molecule has a fused chemical structure of cyclic carbonates that can form a stable solid electrolyte interphase and organic phosphates that can trap hydrogen radicals and prevent combustion.

Battery-powered electric trains will soon bring cleaner air—especially in Europe

Green Car Reports

Trains are about to go electric. Battery-electric, that is. While electrical propulsion has been the preferred way to move trains for most of a century, the idea of moving them longer distances via battery is one that’s just now being realized. Like long-range electric cars, it’s a reality afforded by the energy density and longevity. Green Life

Researchers develop new chemical boundary engineering approach to produce lean, ultrastrong and ductile steels

Green Car Congress

An international team of researchers led by Hao Chen of Tsinghua University has developed a unique chemical boundary engineering (CBE) approach significantly to improve steel’s physical properties. In an open-access paper in Science Advances , the team reports that when applied to plain steels with carbon content of only up to 0.2 wt %, this approach yields ultimate strength levels beyond 2.0 GPa in combination with good ductility (>20%).
