IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

Green Car Congress

Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions were flat for a third straight year in 2016 even as the global economy grew, according to the International Energy Agency. This was the result of growing renewable power generation, switches from coal to natural gas, improvements in energy efficiency, as well as structural changes in the global economy. New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. The study, involving researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and colleagues in China and the United States, investigated how complex supply chains are distributing energy-intensive industries and their CO 2 emissions throughout the global South.

Of the emerging economies, China and India rank 120 th and 177 th respectively, reflecting the strain population pressures and rapid economic growth impose on the environment, note the researchers. Sustainability outcomes among emerging economies remains highly variable. The 2018 EPI offers not only a snapshot of where countries stand today but also reflects important trends in environmental performance at both the national and global levels.

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

The Paris Agreement looks to limit global warming to under 2 ˚C, with a more ambitious goal of 1.5 ˚C If the emissions gap is not closed by 2030, the report says, it is extremely unlikely that the goal of holding global warming to well below 2 ˚C can still be reached. Even if the current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are fully implemented, the carbon budget for limiting global warming to below 2 ˚C will be about 80% depleted by 2030.
