Volvo to concentrate on hybrids and downsized engines for US

Green Car Congress

Volvo Car Corporation will rely on a powertrain strategy based on its new downsized 4-cylinder VEA (Volvo Environmental Architecture) engine platform ( earlier post ) and hybrids for the US market, said John Maloney, recently appointed President of Volvo Cars, US, in an interview at the Detroit Auto Show. The direction for the US was underscored by the unveiling of the XC60 gasoline-electric Plug-in Hybrid Concept at the show.

Toyota and Denso develop SiC power semiconductor for power control units; targeting 10% improvement in hybrid fuel efficiency

Green Car Congress

Toyota intends to leverage the benefits of high frequency and high efficiency of SiC power semiconductors to enable PCU downsizing of 80%. In hybrids and other vehicles with an electrified powertrain, PCUs supply electrical power from the battery to the motor to control vehicle speed, and also send electricity generated during deceleration to the battery for storage. In the current PCUs, coils and condensers, which temporarily hold electricity, take up 40% of the PCU.

EALABC paper outlines approach to 48V hybrid systems with advanced lead-carbon batteries

Green Car Congress

Augmenting its existing LC Super Hybrid program ( earlier post ), which deploys a downsized gasoline-electric powertrain, ALABC is working on advanced diesel-electric applications in development programs being undertaken with car makers including Ford and Kia. Kia’s mild hybrid system will enable a car to be driven in an electric-only mode at low speeds and when cruising, while the battery is recharged under deceleration at all speeds.

A 32 kW traction motor—the transmission-mounted electric device (TMED)—works in tandem with the gasoline engine to produce 146 horsepower and 195 lb-ft (264 N·m) of torque. Because the high-voltage battery is both power and energy dense, engineers were able to use the downsized gasoline engine to maximize fuel economy and reduce emissions.

How Carmakers Are Responding to the Plug-In Hybrid Opportunity

Tony Karrer Delicious EVdriven

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen. And ride off into the sunset on electric power.
