Current mild-hybrid vehicle projects, in partnership with Ford and Hyundai/Kia, that utilize advanced 48V lead-carbon batteries, can reduce CO 2 emissions by 15-20%, according to the latest data from the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC), presented at the Advanced Automotive Battery Conference (25-28 January, Mainz).

One of the issues for the industry to confront in moving away from the NEDC test is that the WLTP typically halves the measurement of CO 2 reduction gained from first generation stop-start systems, which characteristically reduce CO 2 emissions on the NEDC by 5%. This reduces to 2.5% when measuring the same vehicle on the WLTP.

Kia unveiled three major hybrid offerings at the Chicago Auto Show: the 2017 Niro Hybrid Utility Vehicle; the new Optima Hybrid; and the new Optima Plug-in Hybrid. Because the high-voltage battery is both power and energy dense, engineers were able to use the downsized gasoline engine to maximize fuel economy and reduce emissions.
