Report: Volkswagen chief says diesel engine refits manageable; Germany’s KBA signs off on plans for 1.6 and 2.0L engines

Reuters reports that Volkswagen Group chief executive Matthias Müller has told managers in Wolfsburg that the steps needed to fix about 8.5 million Volkswagen cars in Europe fitted with illegal emissions-control software are technically and financially manageable.

Reuters quoted Müller as saying “The efforts (needed) to carry out the refits are technically, mechanically and financially manageable. This is a good development.”

Separately, Audi said it will revise, document in detail, and resubmit for US approval the programming of three AECDs (Auxiliary Emission Control Devices) in 3.0L diesels that were not sufficiently described and declared in the application for US type approval. (Earlier post.)

Audi confirmed that three AECDs were not declared in the context of the US approval documentation. One of them is regarded as a defeat device according to applicable US law. Specifically, this is the software for the temperature conditioning of the exhaust-gas cleaning system. Fixing this will require a “mid-level double-digit million euro” investment.

VW has set aside €6.7 billion to help cover the costs of the diesel recalls and another €2 billion for compensation payments related to its manipulations of carbon dioxide emission levels.

Reuters also reported that Volkswagen has also won the approval of Germany’s KBA for fixes for more than 90% of the affected cars, including models with 1.6 liter and 2 liter engine. Technical solutions for 1.2 liter vehicles will be presented by the end of the month.

According to the report, Müller warned clearing up the emissions scandal would still take several months; VW plans to publish intermediate results of the investigation next month.
