European car market logs best year for alternative fueled vehicles, lowest diesel share since 2001

Diesel vehicles posted their lowest market share since 2001, as demand fell by double digits in 20 of the 27 markets included in JATO’s analysis, with the biggest drops in the UK (-30%), Scandinavia (-22%) and Benelux (-22%). Despite growing at a slower rate than in previous years, the shift from traditional cars to SUVs continued in 2018.

JATO: European car registrations up 5.2% in November; SUVs post record market share

Reports highlight ongoing advances in vehicle technology, consumer demand for fuel efficiency in US and Europe

In Europe, a new report from the European Environment Agency (EEA) found that the average car sold in the EU in 2012 was 9% more fuel-efficient than the average three years before, due to improved technology and an increase in the share of diesel cars.
