Instead of being diesel like virtually all its rivals, the Tank 500 is electrified via a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The e-motor relies on a 1.76kWh lithium-ion battery for juice. A lifetime of driving big diesels has inculcated a certain expectation of noise, vibration, harshness and – sometimes – obvious lag.

Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have shown that sugarcane juice is a good feedstock for biodiesel production, when used to support the growth of the alga Chlorella protothecoides by heterotrophic fermentation. Conversion ratios of sugar/biomass and sugar/oil using SCH were 15.2 higher than that using glucose, respectively.

The new floats have a 40 kWh battery pack supporting a range of up to 75 miles.
