ABB delivers OppCharge fast charger for electric hybrid buses to Bertrange, Luxembourg

ABB has inaugurated the first OppCharge fast-charging station for electric buses in Benelux, in the commuter belt town of Bertrange, Luxembourg. The project has been delivered with ABB fast charging infrastructure and substation to the local authority MDDI Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure; with the support of the national road administration of Luxembourg (Administration des Ponts et Chausseés).

Volvo has received an order for 5 Volvo 7900 plug-in hybrid electric buses ( earlier post ) from bus operator AVL (Autobus de la ville de Luxembourg). The five buses and chargers will be delivered towards the end of this year; one of the bus chargers will be placed at the central station in Luxembourg. Electric bus fast chargers will be supplied by ABB.

The diesel crisis certainly affected the speed of growth in the market, but consumers are overcoming this by turning to more attractive gasoline and AFV solutions. Diesel’s biggest declines took place in Norway (-32%), the UK (-30%), Slovenia (-28%), Finland (-20%) and Belgium (-20%). The market share of diesel vehicles fell to 39.5% This growth can be attributed to key markets such as Germany, Spain and France, as well as five other markets (Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Estonia and Luxembourg), which posted double digit growth. Field tests being conducted in Gothenburg show that Volvo Buses’ plug-in hybrid reduces fuel consumption by 81% and total energy consumption (diesel plus electricity) by 61% compared to a comparable Euro 5 diesel bus. The field test in Gothenburg began in June 2013 and includes three plug-in hybrid buses, the batteries of which are rapidly recharged at the terminals. That’s 81% less fuel than the equivalent diesel bus consumes.

Volvo Buses officially launching plug-in 7900 Electric Hybrid; up to 75% reduction in fuel consumption

Volvo Buses will officially launch the plug-in 7900 Electric Hybrid bus at the International IAA Commercial Vehicles show in September. The plug-in technology reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide by up to 75%, compared to a conventional diesel bus. Three Volvo Electric Hybrids have run in a field test in Gothenburg the past year, a test which has verified the reduction in energy consumption and emissions.
