Nissan to produce Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engines in North America; latest step in collaboration

powertrain assembly plant will build Mercedes-Benz 4-cylinder gasoline engines for Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz models. Production will begin in 2014, with installed capacity of 250,000 units per year once full ramp–up is achieved. Two-seater smart vehicles will be produced at Daimler’s plant in Hambach, France, and four-seater smart and Renault production are slated for Renault’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia.

The smart fortwo is being built at smart’s Hambach plant in France, while the Twingo and the smart forfour are being produced at Renault’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. In September, Renault began supplying 1.6-liter diesel engines for both the new Mercedes C-Class and the Mercedes Vito van. Renault is also supplying a 1-liter, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine and a 900cc turbocharged, 3-cylinder gasoline unit for the smart forfour and smart fortwo.

The two CEOs cited the joint production of Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder gasoline engines in Decherd (Tennessee, USA) as a good example of how the partners profit from the cooperation. Production machinery is now being installed and the start of production is planned for mid-2014.
