Delaware will join 13 other states in adopting California’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) regulations. Managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control ( DNREC ), the ZEV program is designed to accelerate the commercialization of battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles.

The project selections were approved as part of the Low- or No-Emission (Low-No) Grant program, which funds the deployment of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses and supporting equipment and facilities. By retrofitting the garage to service electric buses, the agency will also lower pollution in the surrounding community.

University of Delaware researchers have identified an algae— Heterosigma akashiwo —that grows rapidly on a gas mixture that has the same carbon dioxide and nitric oxide (NO) content as emissions released from a power plant. That alone could save up to 45% of the required energy input to grow algae for biofuels, Coyne said.

EPA anticipates awarding approximately $44 million in Diesel Emission Reduction Program (DERA) grant funding to eligible applicants.
