PG&E, Calif. Energy Commission launch 4MW sodium-sulfur grid storage pilot in San Jose

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and the California Energy Commission today unveiled a utility-scale sodium-sulfur battery energy storage system ( earlier post ) pilot project to better balance power needs of the electric grid. NGK Insulators ( earlier post ) is the manufacturer of the sodium sulfur (NaS) battery system which includes the battery modules and control system for managing DC input/output and other parameters for maximizing module longevity.

GE testing sodium halide battery/Li-ion battery/fuel cell hybrid system for transit bus

GE’s publication reports that GE engineers have begun testing a transit bus equipped with a new hybrid energy system integrating GE’s Durathon sodium-halide battery ( earlier post ), a lithium-ion battery and a hydrogen fuel cell. GE has been exploring ways to synergize the benefits of its sodium-halide Durathon technology, which can store a large quantity of energy but isn’t optimized for power, with power-optimized lithium batteries and hydrogen fuel cells.

Researchers from George Washington University and Vanderbilt University have demonstrated the conversion of atmospheric CO 2 into carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for use as high-performance anodes in both lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. Here we show that this process can be used as a sustainable synthetic pathway for defect-controlled CNT and CNF materials, which exhibit excellent performance in the context of lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery anode materials.

Horizon Unveiling Small Hydrogen Refueling and Storage System for the Home

The device consumes 60W DC per hour to produce 10 liters of hydrogen (0.001 kg) per hour, enough to fill a HydroStik metal hydride storage cartridge. Horizon will also present an upgraded version of its larger portable off-grid DC power supply system HydroPak. HydroPak offers 60W output (120W peak) using water-activated sodium borohydride cartridges supplied by Horizon.
