It’s already been four years since Portland really charged ahead in its commitment to electric cars with Electric Avenue, a project that designated a city block of parking spots plug-in-only, peppered the block with a variety of charger hardware, and let EV owners have at it.

Nissan is working in collaboration with Portland (Oregon) General Electric (PGE) on a six-week trial to help determine the viability of an electric commercial vehicle in the US market. This year, Nissan is deploying two e-NV200 prototypes with companies such as PGE and FedEx in top US EV markets including California, Georgia, Oregon and Washington, DC to determine how businesses could use an all-electric cargo van to meet their day-to-day requirements.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the growth of a robust public DC Fast charging infrastructure, BMW is supporting EVgo’s installation of an incremental 500 DC Fast Combo chargers, to benefit BMW i3 customers and all EV drivers in the US with DC Fast Combo charging capability. car2go North America, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler North America Corporation, launches its car-sharing service in Washington DC this weekend. Beginning 24 March, car2go will begin to deploy 200 smart fortwo cars in Washington DC, distributing them throughout the entire District. In March 2012, car2go will launch in Washington D.C. and Portland, Oregon.

Zipcar to expand Zipvan cargo van service across North America

Zipcar is launching the Zipvan service in Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Portland, Oregon today, and will roll out the service to its remaining metro markets in North America over the next 12 months. The service was expanded to North America as a pilot program in November 2011, and has been well received by Zipcar members in the pilot markets of San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Toronto and Washington, DC, with over 12,000 Zipvan trips taken to date.

Ford begins production of 2012 Focus Electric at Michigan Assembly, C-MAX models on deck

Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant is starting production of the 2012 Focus Electric ( earlier post )—a five-passenger, battery-electric car Ford expects will achieve more than a 100 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) fuel economy rating. By comparison, the Nissan LEAF carries a 99 MPGe (combined) EPA rating, while the smaller i-MiEV carries a 112 MPGe (combined) rating. (1 1 gallon of gasoline=33.7 kWh).

car2go pulls plug on car-sharing service in San Diego, Minneapolis/St. Paul

Daimler’s car-sharing service car2go is suspending its operations in San Diego, California and in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. In San Diego, car2go faced a lack of use, the company said. In the Twin Cities, the issue is the high state car rental taxation rates.

Ford has opened reservations for the 2012 Focus Electric, with a starting price of $39,995, including $795 in destination charges but before state and federal incentives. Buyers can configure a Ford Focus Electric and place orders with a Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) dealer via a dedicated website. A limited number of Focus Electrics will first be available in California and the New York/New Jersey regions.

Pike Research forecasts US plug-in vehicle penetration rates to be highest in smaller states

While the most populous states will see the highest sales volumes, with California, New York and Florida likely leading the way, as a percentage of total vehicle sales, smaller states will lead, with Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, DC, and Delaware among the top states for PEV penetration. The second highest penetration rate will be in California (5.4%), followed by Oregon (5.4%), Washington, D.C. The MSAs that most match the model demographics were: Portland-Vancouver-Beaverton, OR-WA.

I also bit the bullet and decided to try out the Belktronix system for the controller, charger, battery-managment and DC-DC. One person in Longview was gracious enough to take my vehicle back home to Portland on a trailer so I didn't have to sleep in the charging station parking lot to get a charge. I've started to order parts over the past few days since lead times are getting larger these days with the demand. I ordered a Warp9 motor from Carlo at EV-supply in Seattle.

Separately, Daimler car-sharing subsidiary car2go car2go North America, LLC, announced it will launch in two new cities: in Washington, DC beginning 24 March and in Portland, Oregon beginning 31 March. Peer-to-peer car sharing service RelayRides is expanding and is now available to car owners and renters nationwide. RelayRides’ model is based on neighbors renting out their cars to fellow neighbors, instead of one that requires ownership and maintenance of a car fleet.

Brad Hippert, the president of Porteon (www.porteon.net), and I chatted about production of NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) in Portland soon. Last night was the monthly OEVA meeting. There were many electric vehicles there to ponder and I got a chance to chat with a bunch of people. I'm kicking myself a bit for not bringing my digital camera, but that's life.

Alaska Airlines to be Gevo’s commercial launch partner for renewable alcohol-based jet fuel

The carrier flew 75 flights between Seattle and Washington, D.C. and Seattle and Portland in November 2011. Gevo has signed a strategic alliance agreement with Alaska Airlines to purchase Gevo’s renewable jet fuel and fly the first commercial flight on alcohol-to-jet fuel (ATJ). Earlier post.). The single demonstration flight is expected to occur after Gevo receives ASTM International certification for its fuel, sometime in mid- to late-2015.
