Portland's Electric Avenue Relocates, Adds DC Fast Chargers

It’s already been four years since Portland really charged ahead in its commitment to electric cars with Electric Avenue, a project that designated a city block of parking spots plug-in-only, peppered the block with a variety of charger hardware, and let EV owners have at it.

Nissan is working in collaboration with Portland (Oregon) General Electric (PGE) on a six-week trial to help determine the viability of an electric commercial vehicle in the US market. This year, Nissan is deploying two e-NV200 prototypes with companies such as PGE and FedEx in top US EV markets including California, Georgia, Oregon and Washington, DC to determine how businesses could use an all-electric cargo van to meet their day-to-day requirements.

Beginning 24 March, car2go will begin to deploy 200 smart fortwo cars in Washington DC, distributing them throughout the entire District. In March 2012, car2go will launch in Washington D.C. and Portland, Oregon.

I also bit the bullet and decided to try out the Belktronix system for the controller, charger, battery-managment and DC-DC. One person in Longview was gracious enough to take my vehicle back home to Portland on a trailer so I didn't have to sleep in the charging station parking lot to get a charge. I've started to order parts over the past few days since lead times are getting larger these days with the demand. I ordered a Warp9 motor from Carlo at EV-supply in Seattle.

There were many electric vehicles there to ponder and I got a chance to chat with a bunch of people. I'm kicking myself a bit for not bringing my digital camera, but that's life.

The DC-DC converter is still working fine, so the car is actually quite convenient to drive. Apparently Dan is the only guy in the Portland area that has a flywheel balancer with a small enough mandrill to fit the 914 flywheel hole (1/2 inch or so). Since I don't work Fridays, this is the end of my second week commuting to work fifteen miles each way. Two things have definitely made the car more fun to drive.
