Kerala to install solar charging stations for electric vehicles every 50 km
The Kerala government is all set to establish solar-based public charging stations for charging electric vehicles in the State. The Kerala government Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research & Technology or ANERT has issued guidelines for this.
These charging stations will be installed on the premises of hotels, shopping malls and hospitals that are situated with the national highway, MC Road and state highways. The Charging stations at facilities like taking away or refreshments joints, waiting rooms, washrooms will also be permitted to install. Solar plants have a capacity of 5 to 50 kW to set up charging stations. The place is ideal for the plant should be a minimum of 500 sq feet and a maximum of 5000 sq ft.

Solar plant with a capacity of 5 kW will cost between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. A maximum of Rs 10 lakh will be given as a subsidy from ANERT. Between Rs, 13 lakh to Rs 18 lakh will cost for the equipment, transformer and panel board. ANERT aims to establish charging stations for every 50 km of distance. With these charging stations, 3 vehicles such as auto, car and two-wheeler can be charged.
To charge one electric car it will take about 20-30 units of electricity that charges Rs 15 per unit. The charging station owner will have to set aside Rs 5 for KSEB.
FAME India Scheme Phase-II, Department of Heavy Industry had launched the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) to promote and encourage electric vehicles and Hybrid vehicles in India. This scheme has adopted and creation of a market for both hybrids and EVs. The FAME program includes all the vehicles including electric and hybrid two-wheeler, three-wheeler, four-wheelers and buses.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises has declared that about 285,000 buyers of electric and hybrid vehicles have benefited from the subsidies provided under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME-India) program. A substantial amount of ₹3.6 billion has been spent under this program last year. As we all know that FAME India operations are carried out in a phased manner. It has completed phase I and at current it is in its Phase II.
Earlier the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced the list of empanelled bidders who wants to set up electric vehicle charging stations for commercial operations at specific locations in the state. It had invited bids from interested parties to set up electric vehicle charging stations across the state. The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has planned to install 2,000 electric vehicle charging stations in India in FY2020-21. This project will be carried out under the joint venture with the Ministry of Power.
