Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has launched a new Joint Industry Program (JIP) to investigate energy storage systems for the grid. JIP efforts will include developing new test cycles for batteries employed in grid applications, estimating the life span of batteries and their potential for failure, and reducing likelihood of battery fires. Over the course of its life, a grid-connected battery must respond slowly or suddenly, depending on the grid demands.

ARPA-E to award up to $35M to develop tools to transform operations and maintenance of advanced nuclear reactors

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced up to $35 million in new funding for the development of tools and systems that will enable reduced expense and increased flexibility in the operation and maintenance at nuclear power plants. The goal is to create a 10x reduction in O&M costs at advanced reactor power plants, thereby improving their economic competitiveness. O&M is approximately 80% of a reactor’s total generating cost.

MIT study concludes V2G-enabled electric commercial trucks could offer lower total operating cost than conventional diesel fleet
