They are a critical part of global energy security due to the high volume of oil traded through their narrow straits. The Abqaiq-Yanbu natural gas liquids pipeline, which runs parallel to the Petroline to the Red Sea, has a 290,000-bbl/d capacity. Use of the alternate routes would increase the cost of transportation.
