Dutch/Russian effort to commercialize new process to convert flared gas to gasoline via a DME pathway

Green Car Congress

Topchiev Institute for Petrochemical Synthesis ( TIPS ) on marketing a new technology developed by TIPS to convert flared gases into hydrocarbon fuels such as gasoline. The conventional way to make gasoline from gas is to convert the gas to a synthesis gas, then into methanol, followed by conversion to straight-chain hydrocarbons and finally via reforming into a high-octane hydrocarbon blend. The TIPS catalytic converter is better in this and other respects than existing methods.

The process efficiently converts acetone–n-butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation products produced by Clostridium acetobutylicum into ketones via a palladium-catalyzed alkylation. Here we propose a chemical route to convert fermentation products from a variety of renewable carbohydrate sources into hydrocarbons that can be used for petrol, jet fuel and diesel. Tributyrin is not toxic to the bacterium and, like oil and water, doesn’t mix with the broth.

Vehicle breaks CNG speed record

Green Cars News

With only compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling its engine, the Lucas Oil/Lessman Streamliner set an official speed record for a CNG vehicle of 323mph at the Bonneville Salt Flats earlier this month. The blown gas streamliner was designed and built by Riley Technologies and was originally designed to run on petrol. However, Lessman set his sights on a greener approach and converted the large-block Ford V8, 9.37litre turbocharged unit from traditional petrol to CNG.

Expert predictions about where oil and gas prices are headed vary widely. In July of 2008, oil futures hit their record high of more than $145 per barrel and several areas of the country neared $5/gal. While many others agreed (including executives at several auto makers) it is unlikely that higher taxes would be a popular approach to reducing our dependence on oil. A litre of petrol in many European countries is currently the equivalent of $7 per gallon gas (U.S).

Currently even a highly efficient combustion engine will only convert around one third of the energy in the fuel into traction to propel the car, while the remaining two thirds are lost as waste heat going into the environment. Let’s look at each of the projects discussed by BMW: No more cold starts: Starting the engine from cold will consume the largest amount of fuel due to the greater internal friction and the high viscosity of the engine oil when it is cold.
