XL Hybrids, Henley Transmission Services partner to certify AAMCO for hybrid conversion installation, servicing

XL Hybrids, Inc., developer of a low-cost hybrid electric powertrain designed specifically for class 1-3 commercial fleet use (earlier post), has signed an agreement with Henley Transmission Services, LLC, the largest franchise holder of AAMCO automotive service centers, to certify AAMCO technicians to install and service XL Hybrids’ hybrid-electric conversions.

The XL Hybrids powertrain consists of a 2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, a 40 kW (53 hp) electric motor and a proprietary hybrid control system that operate with the OEM internal combustion engine and automatic transmission. The XL Hybrids hybrid powertrain is designed for aftermarket installation.

Commercial vehicle installation takes less than four hours without modifying or removing the original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) engine or transmission. AAMCO service centers will also be trained to provide any necessary warranty service and maintenance on the hybrid vehicles.

The technology improves a vehicle’s US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) city fuel economy by 25%, providing a three-year payback in heavy use fleet applications, or immediate savings when combined with vehicle financing, according to XL.

The partnership between XL Hybrids and Henley Transmission Services is a large step toward nationwide availability of XL Hybrid’s hybrid electric powertrain technology. The hybrid technology is available for the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana cargo and passenger vans, and XL Hybrids is expanding its product lineup to include other makes and models of popular fleet vehicles, including Chevrolet and Ford vans and pickup trucks.

XL Hybrids was founded by MIT alumni and is based in Boston.
