The first of the three concepts, the Mitsubishi Concept GC-PHEV (Grand Cruiser) is a full-size SUV that uses a high output PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) system. The PHEV is equipped with MMC’s S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamic control system for handling, stability and all-terrain capability.

The Concept GC-PHEV is a “connected car” that also offers next-generation preventive safety technology and driver support technology through wireless connectivity.

The second, the Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV ( X (cross) over Runner) is a compact SUV loaded with a lightweight and efficient PHEV system with enhanced environmental performance. Mitsubishi says that the Concept XR-PHEV offers nimble drivability and a body style resembling a sport coupe.

The third concept is the Concept AR (Active Runabout)—a compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) that offers both the mobility of an SUV and the occupant space of an MPV. The latest fuel efficiency technologies adopted in the MITSUBISHI Concept AR include the use of a downsized direct-injection turbocharged engine.

Mitsubishi’s current production plug-in hybrid, the Outback PHEV, endured about a five-month suspension of production earlier this year due to battery problems. (Earlier post.) Production restarted in August, with output slated for Japan and Europe first. US shipments of the PHEV will likely wait until 2014 at the earliest.
