Renault-Nissan Alliance to provide 200 EVs for Paris climate conference

The Renault-Nissan Alliance will provide a fleet of 200 all-electric vehicles as the official passenger-car provider for the United Nation’s COP21 climate conference in Paris later this year. The goals of the Paris summit are to have a new global climate-change agreement in place by the end of 2015 and to have the Climate Green Fund, established to help developing countries adapt to climate change and reduce emissions, start allocating funds.

ITF launches global initiative to decarbonize transport

The International Transport Forum (ITF) at the OECD has launched a major global initiative towards carbon-free transport. Transport activity currently contributes 23% of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, with the share expected to rise. The COP 21 Paris Agreement created a political pathway for global CO 2 mitigation efforts. The long-term objective of the project is to define a commonly-acceptable pathway to achieve zero transport emissions by around 2050.

Speaking this week at the Bloomberg New Energy Finance conference in New York, Total SA’s chief energy economist, Joel Couse, forecasted that EVs will make up 15 to 30 percent of global new vehicle sales by 2030. In January, both companies joined a global hydrogen council that included Toyota, Liquide SA, and Linde AG. Electric cars only make up about 1 percent of global vehicle sales, so making it to 30 percent in the short-term future would be a huge leap.
