Schaeffler presenting new CVT-based plug-in hybrid concept for B- and C-segments

At the VDI Transmission Conference in Friedrichshafen, Schaeffler will be presenting a plug-in hybrid concept based on a CVT (continuously variable transmission). The combination of a hybrid drive with a CVT is not new, but Schaeffler says s=that its variation offers even more efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. What is special about Schaeffler’s solution is the parallel arrangement of the variator and the direct gear stage for the electric drive.

The electric motor used in the plug-in hybrid concept provides 80 kW of power, while a turbocharged 1.4-liter internal combustion engine provides a further 110 kW. When installed in a C-segment vehicle, Schaeffler’s plug-in hybrid concept makes it possible to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds. And in all-electric mode, it can cover 56 kilometers (35 miles) when combined with an 8.7 kWh battery pack, while the continuously variable transmission delivers ride comfort.

In hybrid mode (combined operation of the internal combustion engine and electric motor), compact vehicles achieve an NEDC consumption of 1.6 l/100 km (147 mpg US)—the equivalent of just 39 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Our concept is particularly compact and, due to its low energy losses, means that a long electric driving range can be achieved.

Hi,

do you guys know if this Concept Car is based on a Audi A3 eTron / Golf GTE ? Both have also a 80 kW E-Motor and the 110 kW Turbo Engine, the batterie goes to 8.8 kWh and the E-Range 50 km. By the numbers it seems like Schaeffler could have developed this car with VW/Audi or used their cars. They're in the same segment as well.
